Child and Adolescent Services

“If we can communicate to our children: ‘It’s you and me against your history.’ We have a strong place to begin.” – Dr. Karyn Purvis

At Argyle Family Counseling, we strive to connect to the heart of each child we serve.

We help children and adolescents experiencing difficulty expressing emotion, regulating emotion, social skills, perfectionism, self-worth, anxiety, depression, body image, school performance, self-harm, and aggression. As trauma informed therapists, we help children and adolescents navigate through the emotional and psychological impact of traumatic experiences.

Child & Adolescent Counseling

Each therapist at Argyle Family Counseling carries a deep passion for working with children and adolescents, ages 4-17, as this can be a time of both disorientation and discovery. Our goal is to help the next generation to be able to navigate through life's rapid changes, triumphs and challenges in a way that is both meaningful and productive.

When seeing children and adolescents, we work collaboratively with parents, the family, school counselors, physicians and others to provide an optimum level of care. We strive to incorporate family work while counseling children and adolescents. We see this to be a powerful medium for lasting change within the family system.

We utilize a variety of therapeutic methods such as play therapy, sand tray therapy, EMDR and creative expressions to facilitate meaningful change.

Play therapy allows children to express themselves in a safe, non-judgemental, and comfortable environment. Through play, children can develop a greater awareness about self while developing, practicing, and learning productive coping skills. Play therapy involves and is not limited to play materials, art, sand tray, and music.

Parent Coaching & At-Home Services

We embrace the parent-child relationship and strive to assist parents with partnering with their child to foster healthy self worth, behaviors, and family dynamics. Individual parenting counseling is offered to meet the needs of parents and families. We invite parents to participate in age specific workshops for early childhood, preteen, and adolescents.

We also integrate the therapeutic relationship in a client’s home environment to best intervene, redirect and practice healthy behaviors in live time. In-home/Parent coaching provides an excellent opportunity to have positive counseling experiences in a familiar environment.

The purpose of In-home/Parent Coaching is to assist in the generalization of critical skills and behaviors learned in counseling into the home environment and those learned in the home environment into other settings. Examples of critical skill areas include behavior, communication and self-help. In-home/Parent Coaching provides AFC therapists the opportunity to model to parents effective teaching and behavior management techniques used to implement the child's treatment goals. In-home/Parent coaching requires close collaboration between AFC therapist and parents so that the child experiences a consistent approach in both settings. In general, Parent Coaching is provided prior to consideration of In-Home Training because teaching parents child management skills usually results in better generalization of skills between environments.

What Clients Are Saying…

  • “My daughter had only been offered medicine for her panic attacks by other professionals, but I believed there had to be something else that would help my daughter. I will be forever grateful for finding Serena and the connection, professionality, and expertise she has that restored my daughter's mental health.”

  • “I was not raised in a home that seeks out help of any kind. We just punch through. That changed when our son needed help in ways beyond our ability, which introduced us to Sherry. She helped our family in many ways we never knew we needed. EMDR therapy personally to finally live into who God created me to be. I was able to shed the false self that told me nothing but lies. I am now finishing my bachelor’s degree. Something I never thought I could do before counseling. Sherry is a treasured gift to me and our family.”
